Why prepare questions, and how many should I bring?
Appointments are short, so a list helps you cover your biggest worries first. The AAP suggests bringing your top three to five questions or concerns and raising them at the start of the visit.
How often are well visits in the first year?
In the US, the AAP recommends visits at 3–5 days old and at 1, 2, 4, 6, 9 and 12 months. In the UK, the NHS offers a health visitor review at 10–14 days, a GP check at 6–8 weeks and a review at 9–12 months, plus vaccination appointments.
What’s the difference between well and sick visit questions?
**Well visits** focus on growth, feeding, sleep, milestones, and safety. **Sick visits** focus on symptoms, treatment options, and follow-up care.
Should I bring symptom logs or photos?
Yes. **Notes, feeding/sleep logs, photos, or short videos** can give your pediatrician a clearer picture of what’s happening.
How do I get accurate medication instructions?
Ask your clinician or pharmacist, not a website, for the dose. Ask them to write down the medicine name, which strength to use, the dose in mL for your baby's current weight, how often to give it and the maximum per day. Measure with the syringe that comes with the medicine.
What should I always leave with after a visit?
At minimum: a **diagnosis or working plan**, medication instructions (if needed), **red flag symptoms** to watch for, and **follow-up timing**.
Can this replace medical advice?
No. This is a **support tool only**. Always follow your pediatrician’s direct guidance.
