What is meconium and when should it appear?

Meconium is the first stool newborns pass, usually in the first 24 hours. It is dark and sticky.

When should stools turn yellow?

Many babies shift toward yellow or mustard stools by around day 5 of life (when they are 4 days old), give or take a day, as feeding becomes established.

What does transitional stool look like?

A mix of green/brown/yellow shades. It’s lighter than meconium and less tarry.

Is it common for stools to still be dark on day 4?

Darker green or brown transitional stools are common on day 4. If your baby is still passing black, sticky meconium after day 3, tell your midwife or health visitor.

What if my baby’s stools are pale or white?

Pale, white or chalky stools are a reason to call your midwife, health visitor or GP the same day.

What if there’s red in the stool?

Red stool or blood in it is a reason to call your midwife, health visitor or GP the same day. A tiny streak can have a simple cause (for example irritation), but let them check, especially if your baby seems unwell.

How many stools per day are typical in the first week?

It varies a lot. The NHS says a breastfed baby aged 4 days to 6 weeks who is feeding well passes at least 2 yellow poos a day. Many newborns poop more often than that, and patterns differ by baby and feeding method.
