What do I actually need for a newborn?
Feeding supplies for how you plan to feed, diapers and wipes, a safe sleep space (a crib or Moses basket with a firm, flat mattress and fitted sheets), a few outfits, bath and care basics, a digital thermometer, a rear-facing car seat and your paperwork. Everything else can wait until you know what you'll use.
How many onesies and sleepers should I buy?
Around 6–8 bodysuits and 4–6 sleepers cover the first weeks. Buy fewer if you do laundry often. Babies outgrow newborn sizes quickly.
Do I need a sterilizer?
Only if you'll use bottles or a pump. The NHS advises sterilizing bottles and nipples until at least 12 months, by boiling, cold-water solution or steam. The CDC advises daily sanitizing for babies under 2 months, born prematurely or with a weakened immune system. A dedicated sterilizer is convenient, not essential.
What diaper size should I start with?
Get a small pack of newborn and size 1. Babies can use 8 to 12 diapers a day, so buy more once you know which fit works. Size up if you see leaks or red marks.
Bassinet or crib: which is safer?
Either is fine if it has a firm, flat mattress and fitted sheet with nothing else in it, and your baby sleeps on their back. The NHS and AAP both advise keeping your baby in your room for at least the first 6 months.
What room temperature is best for a newborn?
The NHS and The Lullaby Trust recommend about 16–20°C. Check your baby's chest or the back of their neck to see if they're too hot or cold. Hands and feet are usually cooler. Babies don't need hats indoors.
Do I need a stroller on day one?
No. A carrier or wrap suitable for newborns can cover the early weeks. You do need a rear-facing car seat for the drive home if you're traveling by car.
