Why is tummy time important for babies?

It builds the neck, shoulder and arm muscles babies need for pushing up, rolling, sitting and crawling, and it helps prevent and reduce flat spots on the head (NHS).

How soon should I start tummy time?

From birth. The NHS suggests starting by lying your baby on your chest while you're wide awake, and the AAP says you can start the day your baby comes home, 2 to 3 times a day for 3 to 5 minutes.

How much tummy time does my baby need each day?

The AAP suggests working up to 15 to 30 minutes a day by 7 weeks, and the WHO recommends at least 30 minutes spread through the day for babies who aren't yet mobile. This planner's targets are higher practice goals, but hitting the official amounts is enough.

My baby hates tummy time — what should I do?

Keep sessions short and frequent, get down face-to-face, put toys within view, or try tummy time on your chest or lap, which also counts. The alternatives section on this page gives three gentler positions and a hold target for today. Stop before crying escalates and try again later.

When is the best time of day for tummy time?

The AAP suggests after a diaper change or when your baby wakes from a nap, when they're awake and alert.

When should I be concerned about tummy time progress?

Talk to your doctor or health visitor if your baby always tilts or turns their head one way, you notice a flat spot or odd head shape, or they aren't pushing up onto their forearms on their tummy by around 4 months (a CDC milestone).

What's the safest way to do tummy time?

Only when your baby is awake and you're watching, on a firm, flat surface or on your chest when you're wide awake. Never leave them on their tummy to sleep. Babies sleep on their backs.

Does chest-to-chest tummy time count?

Yes. The AAP and NHS both suggest lying back with your baby on your chest as a way to do tummy time: your baby lifts their head to see your face. Only do it when you're wide awake and unlikely to fall asleep.

Is tummy time safe for babies with reflux?

Ask your doctor or health visitor which positions suit your baby, and keep sessions short. Stop if your baby seems uncomfortable and try again later.

What should I do if my baby only tolerates 10 seconds?

Start there. Enter 10 seconds as the longest happy hold and the alternatives section suggests a slightly longer hold for today. Keep sessions positive and add a little at a time.
