12 Month Old Baby: Milestones, Milk & Sleep
A 12 month old guide on CDC milestones, the 1 year checkup, switching to cow's milk, appetite changes, and sleep. Educational, not medical advice.
How much should a 1 year old sleep?
The NHS says most babies sleep around 12 to 15 hours in total after their first birthday, including naps. Sleep still varies from child to child.
What milestones are common at 12 months?
The CDC lists pulling up to stand, walking while holding on to furniture, picking things up between thumb and pointer finger, waving bye-bye, calling a parent by a special name, understanding 'no', and playing games like pat-a-cake among the things most children do by 1 year. Timing varies.
Can my 1 year old drink cow's milk?
Yes. From 12 months, whole cow's milk can become a main drink, and formula isn't needed. You can keep breastfeeding for as long as you both want. Talk with your provider first if your child has a cow's milk allergy.
Why is my 1 year old eating less?
Appetite often levels off around the first birthday because growth slows compared with the first year. Many 1 year olds eat a lot at one meal and very little at the next, and hunger tends to guide them to eat enough over time. Talk with your provider if you have concerns about growth.
What happens at the 12 month checkup?
The pediatrician usually measures and weighs your child, checks development, and checks for anemia. Vaccines such as MMR, hepatitis A, and chickenpox may be given, depending on the schedule.
What should I track at 12 months?
Growth measurements, vaccinations, first words and steps, meals, and sleep. Nurtura Daily keeps the whole first year in one place, ready for the 1 year checkup.
