8 Month Old Baby: Crawling, Sleep & Solids

An 8 month old guide on crawling, separation anxiety and sleep, finger foods and choking safety, and babyproofing. Educational, not medical advice.

How much should an 8 month old sleep?

The AAP recommends 12–16 hours in 24 hours, including naps, for babies 4–12 months. Separation anxiety can make bedtime and night waking harder for a while.

Is the 8 month sleep regression real?

It's a common name for a stretch of more night waking that parents often notice somewhere around 8–10 months. It isn't a medical diagnosis. Separation anxiety, which often starts around now, can show up at bedtime and overnight, and so can new skills like pulling up to stand.

Why does my 8 month old cry when I leave the room?

Separation anxiety often starts around this age. The AAP says it usually peaks between 10 and 18 months and fades during the second half of the second year. Calm, brief goodbyes and short practice separations at home can help.

What finger foods can an 8 month old have?

Soft foods your baby can pick up and squash, like cooked vegetables, soft ripe fruit, toast, or pasta, cut into pieces no larger than about half an inch. Skip whole nuts and hard foods, and always stay with your baby while they eat.

When do babies pull up to stand?

Many babies start pulling up in the months before their first birthday. The CDC lists pulling up to stand among the skills most babies have by 1 year, so there's a wide window.

Should I use a baby walker?

The AAP advises against baby walkers with wheels: they cause serious injuries, including falls down stairs, and don't help babies learn to walk. Stationary activity centers and play yards are safer choices.
