Newborn Baby Guide: Sleep, Feeding, Diapers & Development
A calm newborn guide covering sleep, feeding, diapers, development, and daily rhythm — plus gentle tracking tips. Educational, not medical advice.
How much should a newborn sleep?
Most newborns are asleep more than they are awake. Total sleep varies a lot, but can be around 18 hours across 24 hours, broken into short stretches day and night.
How often should a newborn eat?
As a rough guide, at least 8–12 times in 24 hours during the first few weeks, and often more. Feeding on cues rather than a strict timer supports growth and, if nursing, milk supply.
Is day and night confusion common?
Yes. Newborns haven't developed a body clock yet. Bright, active days and calm, dim nights can gently help over the coming weeks.
How many wet diapers should a newborn have?
Only 2–3 wet diapers in the first 48 hours is common. From about day 5, look for at least 6 heavy, wet diapers every 24 hours. If there are fewer, or you're unsure your baby is getting enough milk, contact your provider early.
When can tummy time start?
From the day you bring your baby home, while they're awake and supervised. Start with about 3–5 minutes, 2–3 times a day — lying back with your baby on your chest counts — and build up as your baby enjoys it.
Should newborns follow a schedule?
Not yet. At this age, following your baby's cues is more helpful than a fixed schedule. Gentle patterns may appear on their own later.
What should I track in the newborn weeks?
Feeds, diapers, and sleep are the most useful. In Nurtura Daily you can log all three to spot patterns and bring clear notes to checkups.
