How many naps does a baby need by age?

There are no official nap numbers, only total sleep. Common patterns are 4–6 naps for newborns, 3–4 at 5–6 months, 2–3 at 7–9 months, 2 at 10–12 months and 1 nap from about 18 months. The AASM recommends 12 to 16 hours of sleep per 24 hours, including naps, from 4 to 12 months.

Are there official wake window guidelines?

No. The NHS and AAP don't publish wake window numbers. The ranges in this article are rough, commonly used starting points based on Raising Children Network's guidance on awake times and tired signs, not medical rules.

How long can a 3- or 4-month-old stay awake?

As a rough starting point, Raising Children Network describes babies at 3–6 months getting tired after about 1½–3 hours awake. Watch your own baby's tired signs, such as yawning and eye-rubbing, and start settling when they appear.

Should I wake my baby to keep to a wake window schedule?

Wake windows are a guide, not a timetable. Follow your baby's cues, and if you're worried about how much your baby is sleeping or feeding, talk to your doctor.

What should I do if my baby missed a nap?

Move somewhere calm and dim, give extra help settling, and consider an earlier bedtime if the nap is lost completely. Always lay your baby down on their back on a firm, flat surface.
