Partner roles in baby care: sharing the load fairly

Who's up more at night? Who remembers the diapers? Practical ways to split baby care and the invisible mental load fairly, from two parents who learned it.

How should new parents split baby care?

There's no single right split. Options that worked for us include dividing by shifts, trading primary duties (one feeds, the other changes and burps), alternating nights off, and sharing non-baby chores. Revisit the split weekly as the baby changes.

What is the mental load in parenting?

It's the invisible work of remembering and planning — doctor visits, when diapers are running low, meals, milestones. It often falls on one partner without discussion. Naming it and keeping shared information in one place helps balance it.

Can partners get depressed after a baby is born?

Yes. The NHS notes that fathers and partners can also have depression after having a baby. If low mood lasts or you're struggling to cope, speak to your GP, midwife or health visitor.
