What color should newborn poop be?
For the first day or two it is meconium: dark greenish-black and sticky. Around day 3 it turns lighter and greener, and from about day 4 it should be yellow or mustard. Breastfed babies usually have runny, yellow poo with little smell; formula-fed babies tend to have firmer, darker, smellier poo.
How many dirty and wet diapers should a newborn have?
NHS guidance for breastfed babies is at least 2 soft, yellow poos a day from day 4 for the first few weeks, and at least 6 heavy wet diapers every 24 hours from day 5. In the first 48 hours, 2 or 3 wet diapers is typical.
When is baby poop a reason to call the doctor?
Call your midwife, health visitor or doctor if your baby has not passed meconium within 48 hours, if poo is pale or chalky (this can point to a liver problem and needs urgent advice), if there is blood in it, or if it becomes very watery, very smelly or hard. Get urgent help for green or yellow-green vomit, fewer wet diapers, or a baby who is unusually drowsy.
