When can I start tummy time?
From the first days at home. The NHS suggests starting from birth by lying your baby on your chest (only when you are wide awake), and the AAP says you can begin floor tummy time the day your baby comes home from hospital.
How much tummy time does a baby need?
The AAP suggests short sessions of 3 to 5 minutes, 2 to 3 times a day at first, working up to 15 to 30 minutes in total each day by about 7 weeks. Several short sessions count just as much as one long one.
What if my baby hates tummy time?
Many babies protest at first. Try tummy time on your chest, a small rolled-up towel under their arms, getting down face to face, or a toy within reach, and keep sessions short. Timing it after a diaper change or a nap often helps.
What if my baby falls asleep during tummy time?
Tummy time is only for when your baby is awake and supervised. If they fall asleep, move them onto their back in their own safe sleep space.
