When it is not a growth spurt: what parents should notice

Growth spurts make babies hungrier, not sick. Learn the signs that point to something else, the NHS red flags for fever and nappies, and what to log first.

How long does a typical growth spurt last?

Usually a few days. If a hungry, unsettled patch drags on well beyond that, talk to your health visitor or GP.

My baby won't feed and seems tired. Is it a growth spurt?

Unlikely. Growth spurts make babies hungrier. The NHS advises contacting a GP or NHS 111 if a baby is not interested in feeding, and calling 999 if they are very drowsy or hard to wake.

How many wet nappies should my baby have?

After the first few days, the NHS expects at least 6 heavy wet nappies every 24 hours. Fewer than usual is worth a call; no wet nappy for 8 hours or more is an emergency sign.

What temperature is too high for a baby?

The NHS advises calling 111 or your GP urgently if a baby under 3 months has a temperature of 38°C or higher, or a baby aged 3 to 6 months has 39°C or higher.

What should I have ready before calling the clinic?

Feed times and amounts, nappy counts, temperature readings, when symptoms started, and anything new such as a rash or vomiting.
