When can a newborn travel by car?
Most babies travel home from hospital by car, so the focus is on how they travel: a correctly fitted rear-facing car seat, short stints, and regular breaks on longer drives. The NHS and The Lullaby Trust say it's fine for a baby to fall asleep in the car seat while traveling, but take them out once you arrive and don't leave them in it for long periods.
What should I pack for a flight with a baby?
In your carry-on: ID and boarding passes, diapers and wipes for the whole travel window plus spares, a changing mat, 1–2 spare outfits in zip bags, burp cloths, feeding supplies, a thin blanket or sleep sack, and a small health kit with a thermometer. Feeding or a pacifier during take-off and landing can help with ear pressure.
Can I bring breast milk or formula through airport security?
Yes, in the US and UK. The TSA allows formula, breast milk and baby food over 3.4 oz (100 ml) in carry-on bags. Tell the officer and remove them for separate screening. In the UK you can take enough baby milk, food and sterilized water for the journey. Formula needs the baby to be traveling with you, while breast milk doesn't (up to 2,000 ml per container, not frozen). Staff may open containers. Other countries set their own rules.
Do I need a car seat for the plane?
It's not always required, but the AAP says the safest option is a child restraint certified for use in motor vehicles and aircraft (look for that wording on the label) in a seat you've booked for your baby. Lap infants are allowed on many airlines. Airline policies on which seats they accept vary, so check before you fly.
How many diapers should I pack for travel days?
The AAP notes babies can use as many as 8 to 12 diapers a day. Pack that per travel day plus a buffer for delays. For longer trips, carry the first couple of days' worth and buy the rest at your destination.
Do I need a travel crib if the hotel provides one?
Not if the crib is confirmed and safe: a firm, flat mattress with a fitted sheet and nothing else in it. If you can't be sure, pack a light travel crib. Turn on 'Crib provided' in the checklist to hide it.
