How long does cluster feeding last?
Evening clusters often run for 2 to 3 hours before a baby settles (HSE). When they're linked to a growth spurt, the NHS says they may last a few days. When appetite and sleep settle, drift back to your usual rhythm.
Do I need a dream feed?
No, it's optional. Some babies take it well, others resist. If it disrupts sleep or causes more spit-up, skip it. The planner only adds a dream feed if you set it after bedtime and within 3 hours of it.
What gaps should I choose?
The planner suggests shorter ranges for younger and breastfed babies (30–60 minutes at 0–2 months) and longer ones for older or formula-fed babies (up to 90–120 minutes). Treat the gap as a rough guide and feed sooner if your baby shows hunger cues.
Can I cluster feed with formula?
Yes, but the NHS advises not to overfeed. Offer smaller amounts, pace the feed, and stop when your baby shows they're done: turning away, pushing the bottle away, stopping sucking or falling asleep.
Does cluster feeding mean I don't have enough milk?
Not by itself. The HSE notes that feeding more often during a growth spurt doesn't mean your baby isn't getting enough. Wet diapers are a better check: the NHS expects at least 6 heavy wet diapers a day from day 5. If you're worried, ask your midwife, health visitor or a breastfeeding specialist early.
My baby was born early. Should I adjust?
You can enter corrected age, but follow the feeding plan your neonatal team, health visitor or pediatrician has given you. Premature babies often have specific feeding advice.
Is this a medical tool?
No. It's a planning aid. A fever (38°C/100.4°F or higher under 3 months), fewer wet diapers, breathing difficulty or a baby who is unusually drowsy needs medical advice, not a feeding plan.
