What is growth velocity?

Growth velocity is the **rate of growth over time**, measured in kilograms per month for weight or centimeters per month for height.

How often should I check growth velocity?

Monthly or every few months is usually enough. More frequent checks can be misleading because of natural daily and weekly fluctuations.

What does “below typical” mean?

The calculator doesn’t label results — it shows the rate. If your child’s gain is regularly well under the WHO medians above, or they drop across percentile lines on their growth chart, discuss it with your pediatrician. One slow month on its own is common.

Why compare two dates instead of using one measurement?

One measurement only shows **size at a point in time**. Velocity shows how **fast your child is growing**, which can be more informative.

Can I use weight only or height only?

Yes. Choose height or weight at the top: the tool works on one measure at a time. To see both, run it once for height and once for weight.

What factors affect growth velocity?

Nutrition, genetics, sleep, illness, and overall health all influence how quickly a child grows.

Is this calculator suitable for premature babies?

For preemies, doctors often use **corrected age** and may apply special growth charts. This tool provides general guidance only.

How much weight should a baby gain per month?

It depends on age. WHO medians are roughly 0.9–1.2 kg per month in the first two months, about 0.4 kg at 5–6 months, and about 0.23–0.24 kg per month by 11–12 months (girls slightly less than boys). Many babies sit below or above the median.

How do I calculate height velocity?

Take the difference between two height measurements, divide by the number of days between them, and multiply by 30.4375 for cm per month. Longer gaps (a few months) give a more reliable figure than measurements a week or two apart.
